I am a professor in the School of Physics and Astronomy where I collaborate with colleagues in the Edinburgh Complex Fluids Partnership and across the university as well as in the broader Edinburgh skin research community. My research interests include i) the science of topical formulations and their efficacious interaction with healthy, compromised, and diseased skin; ii) characterising the bulk and molecular properties of membranes (in particular the stratum corneum of mammalian skin); iii) the molecular spectroscopy of lipids and proteins, primarily using FTIR spectroscopy methods (ATR, microscopy, imaging).
Since 2013 I have been an adjunct fellow and consultant at TRI Princeton having been an Institute Fellow from 2011 - 2013 when I was based in Princeton. During my time in Princeton I established some of the precursor activities of the current Skin & BioSubstrates Program.
I am an adjunct professor in the James L. Winkle College of Pharmacy's program in Cosmetic Science.
